7. EQUANIMITY IN LOVE (LIBRA)

There is a tendency, particularly among idealistic young people, to equate spirituality and love. Love is the light that illuminates ‘the Path’ which the individual who has consecrated his or her life to the highest value, treads. It is a way filled with obstacles and deceiving shapes, fascinating half-truths and ideals camouflaging ego- wants. Without the light of love, the ‘walking on’ would indeed be dreary and might lead to abysses of darkness; but love does not do the walking. Will and courage are the first requisites. They lead, and later on wisdom becomes the guide, as light takes on the form of one who has gone before over the path and, out of love and compassion, waits for the struggling aspirant rather than take the final step to blissful transcendence.

Yet all loves are not light. How many follies and crimes have been perpetrated in the name of love! How binding, possessive and disturbing or devastating a lover can be! This is why I speak here of a rare virtue, ‘equanimity in love’ – love which is deeply peaceful, serene, which requires no passionate responses, which remains love even if seeming indifference or neglect is the response, which is truly a gift, a sharing of what one IS far more than what one HAS.

‘Equanimity’ implies inner peace and security. The individual is truly equal to all occasions, quietly, but reliably available when needed. The possible fruits of the love are placed on the altar of one’s dedication to the highest value – call it God if you wish – there to be blessed, or burned as useless material, or as incense, to add a rich, warm fragrance to the so often sordid atmosphere of man’s daily existence. This love IS. One does not have to grow into it, to work at it. It is the inner radiance of one’s own being, ready to flow into whoever can RESONATE to its vibrations and commune in its peace. It is ego-less and unaffected by storms.

A great dream, indeed this is; yet we can try to incorporate it into our total being. As we do so, we live up to the highest potential of the equinoctial sign Libra.
